About the Maker
Russell Hackney followed in the footsteps of his father and his grandfather when he joined the family business at 16. He was born in an area in Northern England commonly known as The Potteries: the centre of the ceramics boom in the UK which started in the early 17th century. Stoke-on-Trent, the central city in The Potteries, is the birthplace of well known ceramics brands Royal Doulton and Wedgwood. His grandfather worked in a potbank (We couldn’t have made that up if we tried…) and Russell’s father, also in ceramics, spent most of his career modelling and mold making.
Working in the family business as his father’s apprentice, Russell had the opportunity to collaborate with both large and small scale designers. In 2002, looking for an adventure, Russell immigrated to Canada and started his own Vancouver studio, Russell Hackney Ceramics. His latest work is highly influenced by Canadiana, inspired by the colours of our wild landscapes and the abundance of flora and fauna.
